Mikey Espinosa - The Dying Romantic

Mikey Espinosa – The Dying Romantic

25.11.2013 (Oil on canvas 35.5 x 47 inches)

I decided to do one last painting to end the year. My previous paintings have mostly been in acrylic and I found that using acrylic allows me to have that instant texture that I desire. The last oil painting I did was Mikey Espinosa – Will and that was almost two years ago so I thought it would be interesting to see how much my art has changed and what affect painting in oil would make. I realised that though my technique has changed, painting with oil will still be delicate and smoother than acrylic. This has inspired me to try and work on oil painting next year.

I decided to paint “The dying Romantic” using the same gold and contrast theme I did with the Summer collection I did. I’ve been reading a few novels and poems from the 1800s such as work from Lord Byron, The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and of course watching films such as Les Miserables and (attempting to read the hefty novel by Victor Hugo) as well as admiring art and portraits from the era . The popular movement at the time was the Romantic period and though I’ve just touched the surface of the Romantic period, it’s pulling me deeper. The works have inspired this piece.
